Cama - Leading Change
Education and economic empowerment is giving young women the confidence to act for change. Their impetus is driven by a compassion and empathy borne of their own experience of childhood poverty.
With each year that passes, thousands more young women graduate from education with Camfed's support and join the Camfed alumni – Cama. The Cama membership is a unique pan-African network of young women that is united by a shared background of rural poverty and transformation through education. The power for change is now in their hands.
In their families:
- Young women who would previously have married young and out of financial necessity, are choosing who and when to marry.
- Young women now have their own money are are using it to send their siblings and children to school.
In their communities:
- Young business women are transforming the rural economy by offering goods and services. Their increasing visibility as role models is encouraging the younger generation of girls to aspire in new ways.
- As peer health educators, trained by Cama, they are reaching thousands with vital information on home-based care for individuals living with HIV/Aids, on child nutrition and disease prevention.
In their nations:
- Young women are joining the education, health and law professions. As teachers they are creating a more child-friendly learning environment. As doctors they work respectfully with poor people in their care. And as lawyers, they understand the context of violence and abuse in which many women and children live and can represent their cases powerfully.
Internationally:
- Young women are securing platforms to challenge agencies and governments to rise to the needs of girls and ensure they secure their right to education. With the authentic and powerful voice of experience, they are speaking out on behalf of the millions of girls who are denied the chance to succeed.
By multiplying girls' access to education, we can transform the world. Because when you educate a girl, everything changes.
