Transparency & Governance

Transparency is the heart of all Camfed's workPoor people get used standing in line and being grateful for whatever handout others have decided they should receive. This experience robs people of their confidence and keeps them in a state of dependence.

Camfed is driven by an empowerment philosophy and is answerable first and foremost to every individual on whose behalf we work. Our governance system places transparency at its heart, ensuring that we inform communities, schools, parents and children of their entitlement through our program. The increasing demand for knowledge that results from this approach is a major indicator of social change.

The Camfed Model includes social and financial auditing systems to ensure that money reaches its intended target in a process that safeguards girls and young women. For example:

  • There are just two transactions between the receipt of money by Camfed and the benefiting girls, each of which is under Camfed's control.
  • All families know their own daughter's entitlement to support.
  • The surrounding community knows the criteria by which girls are selected for support.
  • The accounts of all partner schools are audited by Camfed.
  • Mentors are trained by Camfed at each partner school to give girls protection and emotional support throughout their education.

In rural communities Camfed provides training to groups who go on to lobby government and international agencies. At national and international levels, Camfed is calling for transparency in funds earmarked for girls' education, for greater clarity and accessibility of information. Camfed's co-chairship of the United Nations Girls' Education Initiative gives us the lobbying platform to governments and major donors.
